Far from the bloody fields of Anzor, high in the Dark Tower of the Masters, the man who was known as Rocar stood feeling the inky onslaught of the Shadow against his mind. As he felt the first touch of Darkness, fear came at last to him.

He felt himself becoming lost as his vision began to fade and the swirling winds of alien evil began to pluck at his body. Nightmares sprang into his mind and his consciousness began to slip.

But now Rocar fought as he had never before--mentally and physically. The Bane of Kanthos would not conquer him...not while a kingdom depended upon him as their sole champion.

Magic, fantasy, fighting, all in one fantastic story!

A wonderful, exciting story about an ordinary explorer hurled into a kingdom of magic and evil. Instead of becoming the sacrifice, he is somehow able to kill the serpent. Finding himself in a strange place, he must decide how to survive this new, strange place.

I found this to be a very fast paced action story. It is written in a manner that keeps the readers excitement level high. I found myself reading more each day than I planned, and I did not want to put the book down. The story flows very well, and the excitement continues all the way to the end.

Alex Dain has done a very good job writing this book. The reader is drawn into the story, and is kept there. As the reader, you feel everything the hero experiences, and it is hard to come back to reality.

I would easily recommend this book to readers of fantasy, who want an exciting story to read. It is suitable for teens and adults alike. I look forward to the sequel to this book.

The Bane of Kanthos The Chronicles of the Gates Book 1 edition by Alex Dain Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The writer puts some unique twists into this original tale. Time shifting, magic, fantasy and a cliff hanger ending all make this an enjoyable read. There were elements that prevented me from being completely sucked into the story and that is the only reason I am giving this a solid 4 star and no higher.
Written in 1969, following in the vein of R.E. Howard. Action filled from the start to the finish. This is how a good sword and sorcery story should flow.

Yes, I do love reading verbose novels, ie Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time, etc. But I truly enjoy reading the quick and furious pulp style books. And this is a perfect example of it. You need to use your imagination while reading this style of books. Mr Dain grips you from the first page with action, not a lot of boring 'prologue world building', and I applaud it.

A simple story of a man thrust into another world, and is tasked with saving it. And it was all done in under 150 pages. I can still see the world in my mind. Mr Fain doesn't mince words. He gets right to the point, unlike me, lol.

If you like pulp fantasy, get this book. If you have never read pulp fiction before, grab this as a great introduction to the genre.....
I loved this story I have all been fascinated by Vikings Once I got started on this book putting it down was impossible this is worth 10 stars instead of 5 this author you could tell knew his genre well and he took it and played on the readers emotions well done Alex Dane great work can't wait to read more by this author.
Loved the action and characters. I could easily see this as a movie - or have I? Oh well, loved it from beginning to end anyway. Our hero, Rocar is the chosen one. He must defeat the treacherous enemy alone if the people are to be saved. The action in this fantasy/magic story is non-stop. The character descriptions are wonderful, it's no wonder one would feel as if its already been on the big screen!
This book starts off with an interesting, if undeveloped premise. I kept reading hoping for more explanation, more character development, just more. I felt like I missed the part that said it was a short story. There were so many opportunities for the author to flesh out characters, events, and background history. If there are more books on the way, I hope they have much more depth than this one did.
Just as good as the first time I read it back in 1971! It's not an epic, but it's a good, solid Sword & Sorcery story. Now if Mr Dain would just get around to a follow-up so that we can find out what happens to Robert Lansing, I might even up my rating to a full 5 stars.
Come on now, I've been waiting for 45 years. I'm getting old and my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be. ;-)
One of the best books I've read in the past 40 years! It even surpasses the series of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs (John Carter of Mars), Otis Kline (Venus trilogy) and the 40-plus books by Jeffrey Lord (Blade). Robert Lansing is chased by headhunters, battles a serpent and is transported to another world via a gate portal. He then helps the Vikings battle an evil army that relies on magic. What's nice about the book The author doesn't have the Vikings talking in
their own language, thus making it extremely easy to understand what is being said. This book is the first one of a new series. It should be highly enjoyable, following the further exploits of Robert Lansing (a.k.a Rocar), as he battles evil in this new world. A definite must read book
for anyone who enjoys high adventure on a continuing basis!
