Flowers of Pohutukawa at first glance is a plain, straight forward story of two very different girls and the entwining of their paths. But look closer and you will see that it is deceptive in its simplicity.The writing is honest and unadorned. No pains are taken to dress the text up in frills and lace. What is left, in the absence of ornamentation, is story. Just that. As a result, the reader is engulfed into the world of A Ko and B Ko. One can easily forget they are reading a story and instead feel like they are spying on the intimate lives of the characters.
A Ko is an uptight, no nonsense girl who likes being alone and is perfectly complacent with her monotonous existence. But when B Ko enters her life, in a whirlwind of emotion, noise, and beauty, her life is turned upside down. Together, the girls mold each other, sharing one another's pain and misfortune, happiness and experiences.
Flowers of Pohuntukawa is a gem of a novella, a bittersweet, sensual ride that soothes as much as it stings. The imagery is captivating.
The author has placed a great effort on subtlety. And the ending is haunting and immensely powerful. Hopefully, this author writes more. It's a good first start. Next time, I would like to see a longer work, with more character development and plot. But this story is fine just on it's own. It has an Ernest Hemingway like frankness to it. And at $.99 cents, its an awesome buy!
