I was pleasantly surprised by this novel of a retired school teacher who sees a child in distress. Before she can assist the child, she is attacked. The police regard her as being a bit confused and the media portrays the child's disappearance as a publicity stunt. Augusta - the heroine - knows this is not the case and sets out to investigate, meeting some interesting people during her hunt.I don't want to write a spoiler, so I shall get to the nitty gritty of the review. A slower pace fits the plot. If you are after a "helter-skelter" style race to solve the mystery, you won't get it here. You will not get a serial killer,a heroine too smart and tough for her own good while she strives to overcome an angst-ridden past (dead cop father/lover murdered/her own cowardice/a traumatic accident - the list is endless) or continual swearing!
This is a good thing for a novel which is refreshingly different, but on the other hand, the crimes committed during the story didn't feel particularly serious, the police didn't appear as anxious as is usual in a plot of this type, perhaps because of the unusual storyline.
However, I will be looking for more novels from this author!

A wonderfully written story that keeps you so inthralled you can't put it down. Miss Weidenmaier is a delightful character and quite the sleuth. Looking forward to sharing future adventures with her Brown and Harris
Inside look at backstage TV in NYC Engaging characters, humor, and retired female schoolteacher as the amateur detective. Will keep you reading to the end and hoping for more to come.
