Edmund Clerihew Bentley published a volume of nonsense verse consisting of a series of four-liners designed to poke fun at distinguished personalities. Illustrated by Bentley's lifelong friend, eminent critic and author G K Chesterton, they were known as 'clerihews' and became as popular as the limerick form. In Complete Clerihews the entire collection is presented, with original illustrations. The assortment of well over 100 participants includes Karl Marx, Jane Austen, Mussolini, Henry VIII, Noel Coward, Tennyson, Dante, Leonardo Da Vinci, Dorothy Sayers, Aeschylus, Keats, President Roosevelt, Cleopatra and Lewis Carroll.

I bought this book as a Chrstmas present for my husband after we had read Trent's Last Case together, because I wanted him to enjoy another side of E. C. Bentley, and I've been reading him selections from it ever since. We laughed out loud over some, but others didn't quite measure up. That fact, along with the fact that the introduction rather slighted Ogden Nash, some of whose clerihews I can still quote after reading them several decades ago, is the only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five.Product details

If you don't know what a clerihew is, I can promise you that you will immediately start writing one yourself before venturing very far into this book.
