We weren't sure what to expect when we ordered this, but my 10 year old daughter and I loved reading this together and are anxiously awaiting the next one. The modern-day tale of kids Haylwen and Cadarn growing up in the everyday American landscape of school and teen angst who slowly discover their magical roots is gripping even though there are some characters like Feabee and her charges who seem sort of hastily added in to give the Rightads a place to go (e.g. it's not clear to me why, exactly, Haylwen feels so at home there--more development of their lifestyle and a little more time spent with the kids before some of the story's climactic events occur would go a long way toward making the new friendship feel real). I'm hopeful these new characters will be developed more in the next installment, including the history of Feabee with the Rightads (there is some stuff hinted at but not ever revealed in this book).Oh, and the plot may sound at first glance like Harry Potter, but it has a totally different feel and so far there is no Hogwarts-type school or anything, and there is even a king mentioned in the prologue so it sounds a lot larger. I'm really curious how the magical world works and hides from the rest of us in this series, it's another aspect which we get to glimpse but so far have not fully understood.

Great read for young people or elders who like fairy tales... I was engaged by the characters and surprising twists! Anything can be a dragon!?!

I Loved the book. It took me awhile to figure out which one was chosen. Because they both had power and was using it with out realizing it. I should have realized it when the fish, teacher both gave her gifts. Sometimes I am just so slow.
This is a must have for all Harry Potter fans. It's very different, not in concept and writing style, but just as addictive. Now I absolutely can't wait to get the next one. I would recommend it for anyone who loves clean cut fantasy and action books with sweet romance and friendship.
This book is about the coming of age of a boy and girl. The parents are on the run from an evil king and are under oath to not teach or use magic. As the boy and girl enter puberty, their powers manifest and the parents must keep them safe until they fully develop their powers. Good introduction to a trilogy. I look forward to #2 in the series.
Story line was going ok, but nothing was fleshed out. Problem was, not one thing was finalized during the read. Of course it also had to have a cliff hanger so that you'd purchase the next book in the series. Sorry but I personally, didn't like the book well enough to purchase the rest of the set.
